AI Overviews on Branded Searches: How to Control Your Brand Answer
October 30, 2026
Branded Search Has Changed: AI Overviews on Your Company Name and What to Do About It
For years, branded search was the safest part of SEO. Someone typed your company name, your homepage appeared first, and the click was yours. That's no longer guaranteed. In September and October 2026, Google began showing AI Overviews on a much larger share of searches for brand names, which means the first thing many prospects now read about your business is a summary Google wrote, not a page you control.
This matters most at the bottom of the funnel. People who search your name are usually close to a decision. If the AI summary gets your pricing wrong, mixes you up with a similarly named company or leads with an old complaint, you lose deals you never knew were in play.
What changed this fall
Two data points stand out:
- AI Overviews on branded queries roughly tripled during September, according to DemandSphere data cited by Search Engine Roundtable and summarized in LSEO's September roundup.
- 93% of brands tested showed AI Overviews on branded searches in an October check of large brands including Reddit, Salesforce, Amazon and Adobe, reported by Chris Long.
These were mostly large brands, and coverage will vary for smaller businesses and local searches. But the direction is clear, and Google's other moves this year point the same way.
Google is building more brand-controlled surfaces, too
The good news is that Google is also creating more places where official brand sources get priority.
An "official pages" test. On October 15, 2026, Google announced five link updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews. One is a test of a dedicated section at the top of some responses showing the one or two official pages needed to complete a task, according to Google's announcement and PPC Land's coverage. Google is also moving inline links higher in responses. If your site has clear, task-focused pages (book an appointment, request a quote, check pricing, contact support), you're better positioned for this kind of placement.
Search profiles. In June, Google launched Search profiles, a shareable space where publishers and creators can showcase articles, videos and social posts. In September, Google lowered subscriber requirements and added single-login management for multiple profiles, according to Search Engine Land. The October update also tests clickable creator names on AI Mode video results that link to these profiles.
Preferred Sources. Google says Preferred Sources usage has grown more than sevenfold since the start of the year. For businesses that publish regular content, encouraging loyal readers to add you as a preferred source is a small but real lever.
Where AI Overviews get their information about your brand
When Google summarizes a company, it draws on a mix of sources. In our audits, the usual inputs are:
- Your own website, especially the homepage, About page, service or product pages, pricing and FAQs.
- Google Business Profile for local and service businesses: hours, categories, services, reviews and Q&A.
- Review platforms such as Google reviews, Yelp, Trustpilot, G2 or industry directories.
- News and third-party articles that mention your company.
- Community discussions on Reddit, forums and social platforms.
- Structured knowledge sources like Wikipedia, Wikidata and business registries, where they exist.
If these sources disagree (different addresses, old service lists, conflicting pricing), the AI summary often reflects the confusion. Consistency is the single biggest lever you control.
A branded search audit you can run this week
Here's the process we run for clients. It takes a few hours.
Step 1: Search your brand the way customers do
Don't just search your company name. Search the variations prospects use:
- [Brand] reviews
- [Brand] pricing / cost
- [Brand] vs [competitor]
- Is [Brand] legit
- [Brand] + [city]
- [Brand] complaints
Run each on Google (logged out, in a private window), in AI Mode, and in ChatGPT and Gemini. Screenshot the answers.
Step 2: Score accuracy
For each answer, check:
- Is the description of what you do correct and current?
- Are prices, locations and hours right?
- Is the sentiment fair, or is one old negative review dominating?
- Are you confused with another company?
- Which sources are cited?
Step 3: Fix the source, not the symptom
You can't edit an AI Overview directly. You can fix what it reads. Common fixes include:
- Rewriting your homepage and About page so the first paragraph clearly states who you are, what you do, who you serve and where.
- Publishing a transparent pricing or "how much does it cost" page, even if it's ranges.
- Updating your Google Business Profile categories, services and description.
- Responding to negative reviews with specific, professional replies that show resolution.
- Correcting outdated directory listings.
- Adding Organization structured data with consistent name, logo, address and social profiles.
Step 4: Fill the "vs" and "reviews" gaps
If AI answers about "[Brand] vs [Competitor]" rely entirely on a competitor's comparison page, publish your own fair comparison. If "[Brand] reviews" surfaces a single complaint thread, a steady flow of recent customer reviews will dilute it over time.
Monitor your brand continuously, not once
AI answers change. Google made AI Mode's information monitoring available to all users in September, letting people ask Search to keep watching for changes like prices, availability or new local businesses, as noted by Search Engine Land. Google first previewed these background "information agents" at I/O 2026.
That means prospects can set up ongoing tracking of your category, and whatever is said about you can be resurfaced to them weeks later. You should be monitoring at least as closely as they are. A monthly branded-prompt check across Google, ChatGPT and Gemini, plus Google Alerts and review notifications, is a reasonable minimum.
One caution for local businesses: Google Business Profile insights were missing data for all of September 2026, according to Search Engine Roundtable. Don't misread that gap as a performance drop.
Special considerations for local businesses
For clinics, law firms, trades, restaurants and other local businesses, branded AI answers often blend your website with Google Maps data. Google's Ask Maps, launched in the US and India in March, brings Gemini-powered conversational answers directly into Maps. Treat your Google Business Profile as a primary website:
- Complete every field, including services, attributes and booking links.
- Post updates regularly.
- Answer common questions in the Q&A section yourself.
- Keep photos current and authentic.
What a branded AI audit typically uncovers
Every business is different, but branded AI audits tend to surface the same handful of problems. Here's what we most often find, and the usual fix.
Finding
Usual cause
Typical fix
Outdated services or products described
Old blog posts, stale directory listings
Update or redirect old pages; refresh listings
Wrong or missing pricing
No pricing page, so AI uses third-party guesses
Publish ranges or starting prices with context
Confusion with a similarly named company
Weak entity signals, inconsistent naming
Consistent name, Organization schema, clear About page
One old complaint dominates
Few recent reviews
Steady review program and professional responses
Competitor framing in "vs" answers
Only the competitor has a comparison page
Publish a fair comparison of your own
Missing locations or hours
Incomplete Business Profile
Complete every field and keep hours current
Most of these fixes take days, not months. The harder part is keeping them fixed, which is why ongoing monitoring matters.
Who should own branded AI monitoring?
Branded AI answers sit between marketing, communications, customer service and sales, which often means nobody owns them. Assign a single owner, usually in marketing or communications, with a simple monthly routine:
- Run the branded prompt set across Google, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini.
- Log inaccuracies and the sources behind them.
- Route fixes to the right team: web content to marketing, reviews to customer success, listings to operations.
- Share a short summary with sales so reps know what prospects are reading.
For multi-location businesses, add a quarterly check of each location's Business Profile and local AI answers. Small inconsistencies across locations add up quickly.
The bottom line
Your brand name is no longer a guaranteed click. It's a question that Google, ChatGPT and other assistants answer on your behalf. You can't control the answer directly, but you can control the sources it reads. Businesses that keep their website, profiles and reviews accurate, consistent and current will get fair, accurate summaries. Those that don't will be described by whoever wrote about them last.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there an AI Overview when I search my own company name? Google has expanded AI Overviews to many more branded searches this fall. It summarizes your company from your site and third-party sources instead of only listing links.
Can I remove an AI Overview about my brand? Not directly. Google offers a Search Console control to limit how your content appears in AI features, but that doesn't stop Google summarizing third-party content about you. The better route is fixing inaccurate sources.
Will AI Overviews on branded searches reduce my traffic? Some navigational clicks may be absorbed, especially for questions like hours or pricing. Clear task-focused pages and Google's official pages test may help recover clicks for actions like booking or buying.
What structured data helps branded search? Organization and LocalBusiness markup with consistent names, logos, addresses and social profiles help search engines connect your entity across the web.
How often should I check my branded AI answers? Monthly at minimum, and immediately after major changes like a rebrand, price change, new location or press coverage.
